Sometime during the night, Billy woke up.

At first he wasn’t sure why.

Then he heard it.

A knock.

Not on the front door.

On his bedroom door.

Three slow knocks.

Billy sat upright.

“Yeah?”

A familiar voice answered.

His friend.

“Hey, open the door.”

Billy frowned.

“What do you want?”

There was a pause.

Then:

“Just open the door. I’ll explain in a second.”

The request immediately felt strange.

It was the middle of the night.

Why wouldn’t his friend simply tell him what was wrong?

Billy stayed where he was.

“Tell me through the door.”

Another pause.

Then the voice said something that made Billy’s stomach tighten.

“I can’t come in unless you open the door.”

The words sounded wrong.

Not because of what they meant.

But because of how they were said.

Billy stared at the door.

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

Then the knocking began again.

Harder this time.

“Let me in.”

Billy refused.

The voice became more desperate.

“Let me in.”

For hours, according to the story, the knocking continued.

Sometimes soft.

Sometimes violent.

But always accompanied by the same request.

Billy never opened the door.

And eventually, sometime before dawn, the knocking stopped.
