The Appalachian House — Part 4 — The Phone Call
The voice on the phone was his mother’s.
According to the story, the young man recognized it immediately.
But something was wrong.
She sounded panicked.
Out of breath.
And completely confused.

The first thing she asked was:
“Where are you?”
At first, the son reportedly thought she was joking.
Only minutes earlier, he had been standing at the basement door speaking directly to both of his parents downstairs.
But according to the retelling, his mother sounded genuinely frightened.
Then she said something that made his stomach immediately drop.
She and his father were not home yet.
Their car had broken down miles away on a mountain road, and they had been trying to call him repeatedly for nearly an hour.
The young man reportedly went completely silent.
Because downstairs beneath him, the basement lights were still on.
And according to the story, he could still hear movement below the floor.
Slow footsteps.
Something shifting around in the basement apartment.

His mother kept talking on the phone, asking if everything was okay.
But according to the retelling, the son could barely process what she was saying anymore.
Because moments earlier, he had spoken face-to-face with something downstairs pretending to be both of his parents.
And whatever it was…
had invited him to come down to the basement at exactly 3:00 AM.
The realization reportedly hit him all at once.
That explained the strange behavior.
The repetitive conversations.
The emotionless voices.
The reason his “parents” never fully stepped into the light.
And according to the story, he suddenly understood something even more terrifying:
Whatever was downstairs had been watching him for days.
Learning how his parents talked.
Learning how they sounded.

According to some versions of the story, the young man slowly backed away from the basement door while staying on the phone with his mother.
Others claim he immediately ran outside and waited in his car until his parents finally arrived home.
But nearly every retelling includes the same final detail.
Just before leaving the house, he allegedly heard his mother’s voice call softly from downstairs one last time.
Calm.
Patient.
Almost amused.
“Asher… it’s almost 3:00.”
The story never explains what was in the basement.
Some people believe it is simply internet horror folklore inspired by Appalachian legends about entities that imitate human beings.
Others connect it to old mountain stories warning people not to trust familiar voices late at night.
Most likely, it is just a fictional story designed to create suspense.
But that final image is what continues haunting people online:
A quiet Appalachian house deep in the mountains.
A basement light still glowing beneath the door.
And something downstairs patiently waiting for him to come back.
