The Appalachian House — Part 2 — The Basement Routine
After a while, the young man stopped trying to convince himself the strange behavior downstairs was normal.
Something about his parents felt different at night.
Not dramatically different.
Just… off in ways he could never fully explain.
According to the story, every conversation through the basement door started following the exact same pattern.
He would come home late.
The basement lights would already be on.
And his parents would always be awake.

At first, he assumed maybe they were dealing with insomnia or stress.
But the routine became impossible to ignore.
No matter what time he returned home, they were always downstairs doing… something.
And according to the retelling, they never clearly explained what it was.
Sometimes he could hear faint movement before opening the basement door.
Other times, complete silence would suddenly stop the moment he approached.
That was the part that started bothering him most.
The silence.
The entire house would feel unnaturally quiet late at night, except for whatever was happening downstairs beneath him.
According to the story, the young man gradually began dreading those nightly interactions.
Whenever he opened the basement door, his parents would reassure him in calm voices that everything was okay.
But they reportedly never sounded fully natural anymore.
Almost emotionless.
Like they were carefully trying to imitate how they normally spoke.
“Everything’s fine.”
“Go upstairs.”
“Don’t worry about us.”
The son allegedly started noticing smaller details too.
His parents rarely stepped fully into view anymore.
The basement lighting always seemed strangely dim.
And no matter how long he stood there talking, they never invited him downstairs.
Not once.

According to the retelling, the atmosphere inside the house became heavier as the days passed.
The young man reportedly began sleeping poorly.
Sometimes he claimed he could hear movement downstairs long after everyone should have been asleep.
Slow footsteps.
Occasional scraping sounds.
And once or twice, what sounded like whispered conversations too quiet to understand.
Still, every morning everything returned to normal.
His parents acted ordinary during the daytime.
Nothing looked wrong inside the house.
Which slowly made the son question himself instead.
Maybe exhaustion was affecting him.
Maybe isolation in the mountains was making him paranoid.
But then something happened that completely changed the routine.
According to the story, one night the son came home while getting ready to head back out to a friend’s house.
As usual, he stopped by the basement door to tell his parents he wouldn’t be home for most of the night.
Only this time, instead of telling him to go upstairs…
his parents invited him downstairs.
Not immediately.
At exactly 3:00 AM.
They said they had a surprise they wanted to show him.
And according to the story, that was the moment genuine fear finally started settling in.
Because for the first time in weeks…
whatever was downstairs wanted him to come closer.
