Part 4 — The Thing in the Dark

The moment the door closed behind him, the storm disappeared.

The cabin became silent.

Too silent.

According to the story, David stood motionless while his eyes struggled to adjust.

But the darkness remained absolute.

It was impossible to see who else was inside.

Still, relief began replacing fear.

At least he was warm.

At least he was alive.

Trying to be polite, David spoke into the darkness.

“Thank you. Thank you so much.”

His voice trembled.

“I’ve lost my friend. We got separated in the storm. I just need somewhere to stay until morning.”

No answer came.

Only silence.

Assuming the owner was somewhere deeper inside the cabin, David found a place to sit.

The exhaustion hit him immediately.

Every muscle ached.

Every part of him felt frozen.

After several minutes, he tried speaking again.

“If you give me a little while to warm up, I’ll go outside and gather some wood. We can get a fire going.”

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the voice returned.

Soft.

Quiet.

Almost impossible to hear.

“Yes…”

David waited.

The whisper continued.

“Hungry.”

A cold sensation spread through his body.

The word didn’t sound like a request.

It sounded like an observation.

David swallowed.

Trying to stay calm, he answered:

“I don’t have any food. Everything is back at our campsite.”

Silence returned.

Long.

Uncomfortable.

Heavy.

Then according to the story, David slowly began noticing something.

Throughout the entire conversation, he had never once heard the owner move.

No footsteps.

No shifting furniture.

No breathing.

Nothing.

Only the voice.

Somewhere in the darkness.

And as his eyes adjusted slightly, he realized something even worse.

The darkness across the room wasn’t empty.

Something was sitting there.

Watching him.

The story never clearly explains how David escaped.

Some versions claim he fled back into the storm.

Others say rescuers found him wandering near the lake the following morning.

But every version ends with the same unsettling detail:

David never found Alex.

And years later, he still wondered whether the whisper in the woods had been trying to warn him…

or whether it had been leading him exactly where something wanted him to go.
