Part 1 — The Tunnels Beneath Portland
Beneath the streets of Portland lies a network of underground passageways that have inspired stories for more than a century.
Known as the Shanghai Tunnels, they were built during the 1800s and became connected to countless tales of disappearances, kidnappings, and sailors who supposedly vanished from the city without a trace.
Whether every story is true remains debated.
What isn’t debated is the reputation the tunnels developed.
Even today, many locals refuse to go underground.
According to one story, there was a man named Sean who worked in downtown Portland.
Sean loved local history.
He spent his free time exploring old buildings, reading about forgotten events, and searching for unusual places hidden throughout the city.
That’s how he met a man named Eli.
Unlike Sean, Eli hated discussing the tunnels.
Every time someone mentioned them, he became visibly uncomfortable.
He would change the subject.
Leave the conversation.
Or simply walk away.
Eventually Sean asked why.
According to the story, Eli hesitated before admitting something strange.
He knew where one of the old entrances was located.
Not a tourist entrance.
Not one of the public locations.
A real entrance.
Hidden.
And according to Eli, there was something down there he never wanted to encounter again.
Sean immediately became fascinated.
The more Eli refused to explain, the more curious Sean became.
What could possibly scare a grown man so badly that he refused to even discuss it?
For weeks Sean kept asking questions.
Weeks turned into months.
Finally, after relentless persistence, Eli reluctantly agreed to take him.
But before they left, he issued a warning.
“If we hear anything down there,” Eli allegedly said, “we leave.”
Sean laughed.
Eli didn’t.
