The trail wound deeper into the mountains.

Hours passed.

The hiker enjoyed the scenery and barely thought about the ranger’s warning.

At least not at first.

Then he noticed something strange.

The woods had become silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

No birds.

No insects.

No rustling leaves.

Nothing.

According to the story, the realization unsettled him immediately.

Forests aren’t supposed to sound like that.

Even remote wilderness has noise.

Yet the farther he hiked, the more complete the silence became.

At first he tried rationalizing it.

Maybe the weather had changed.

Maybe wildlife had moved elsewhere.

But the feeling persisted.

Something wasn’t right.

Eventually the sun began dropping toward the horizon.

The hiker faced a choice.

Attempt the long hike back in darkness.

Or spend the night in the woods.

The ranger’s warning resurfaced immediately.

You don’t stay out there tonight.

For a while he considered turning around.

But darkness was approaching quickly.

And according to the story, exhaustion finally made the decision for him.

He found a small clearing beside the trail.

Built a fire.

Unrolled his sleeping bag.

And settled in for the night.

The flames crackled softly.

The forest remained completely silent.

No birds.

No insects.

No animals.

Nothing.

As he lay staring into the darkness beyond the firelight, he found himself thinking about the ranger.

About the caves.

About the abandoned mines beneath the mountains.

And according to the story, just before sleep finally came, he heard something move in the darkness beyond the trees.

Something large.

Something deliberate.

Something that had been waiting for the forest to go silent.
