Part 1 — What Lives Beneath Appalachia?

For generations, people have shared strange stories about the Appalachian Mountains.

Stories about unexplained sounds.

Stories about disappearances.

Stories about encounters deep in the wilderness that witnesses struggle to explain.

According to one storyteller, a pattern began emerging when he started examining many of these reports.

A surprising number seemed connected to caves and abandoned mines.

The observation led to a disturbing question.

What if the caves weren’t simply locations where strange things happened?

What if they were the reason strange things happened?

Many parts of Appalachia are riddled with enormous cave systems stretching for miles beneath the mountains.

Old mines cut even deeper into the earth.

For generations people blasted, drilled, and carved tunnels into places that had remained sealed for centuries.

The storyteller wondered whether opening those hidden spaces may have disturbed something.

Released something.

Not necessarily a creature.

Not necessarily anything that could be explained.

Just something that didn’t belong on the surface.

Something that now moved up and down the mountains.

According to the story, one particular encounter began with a man who knew nothing about those theories.

He was simply an experienced hiker planning a day on the trail.

He packed water.

Food.

Emergency supplies.

And a sleeping bag strapped to the back of his pack.

A routine decision that would soon lead to a conversation he would never forget.
