Part 2 — The Sheriff’s Last Warning

(Part 1) ➡️ https://storiesworld.us/archives/9886

The deeper they traveled into the wilderness, the more uncomfortable Mike became.

The warnings from locals kept replaying in his mind.

Most people had avoided discussing the area entirely.

Those who did speak offered only vague warnings.

Nobody explained why.

Late that afternoon, they encountered a sheriff’s vehicle parked along the side of the road.

The deputy stopped them and asked a few routine questions.

Where were they headed?

How long were they staying?

Did they own the property?

At first the conversation seemed completely normal.

Then Mike mentioned the location of the cabin.

The sheriff’s expression changed immediately.

For several seconds, he simply stared at them.

Then he asked whether they intended to stay overnight.

When Mike said yes, the sheriff sighed heavily.

According to the story, he repeatedly encouraged them to reconsider.

At first, he spoke about safety.

The area was remote.

Help could take hours to arrive.

Weather conditions could change quickly.

But eventually he said something that completely changed the conversation.

“If something happens to you out there, we will not respond.”

The statement caught everyone off guard.

Mike thought he had misheard.

Surely the sheriff didn’t mean it literally.

Yet he repeated it.

“If something happens, you’re on your own.”

Mike asked why.

The sheriff refused to answer.

Instead, he simply repeated the warning one final time before returning to his vehicle.

The encounter bothered Mike for the rest of the drive.

What could possibly make law enforcement refuse to respond?

Criminal activity?

Dangerous terrain?

Something else?

Eventually they reached the property.

A narrow dirt road disappeared into the trees.

The cabin sat nearly a mile from the nearest maintained road.

It looked exactly as Mike remembered.

Old.

Weathered.

But surprisingly well preserved.

The first few hours passed peacefully.

They unpacked supplies.

Explored portions of the property.

Walked old trails.

Everything seemed normal.

Then, shortly before sunset, Mike noticed something standing between the trees.

At first, he assumed it was a deer.

The shape was right.

The size was right.

Yet something felt wrong.

The animal seemed unusually tall.

Its posture looked strange.

Almost human.

Before he could get a better look, it vanished into the woods.

His friends laughed when he mentioned it.

Mike tried laughing too.

But deep down, he couldn’t shake the feeling that what he had seen wasn’t a deer at all.
